BELGIUM / PROFESSIONAL CARD
The Belgian professional card is required for many non-EU nationals who wish to carry out a self-employed activity in Belgium. It serves as an authorization to work as a self-employed professional and is assessed by the competent regional authority.
Business structure
Business activities in Belgium are commonly carried out through company forms such as the SRL/BV or the SA/NV, depending on the structure, governance and funding needs of the project. The appropriate form should be assessed in light of the applicant’s business plan, tax situation, liability exposure and long-term objectives.
Validity and renewal
The professional card may be granted for a limited period, up to a maximum duration determined by the competent regional authority. In Brussels, the card may be issued for up to five years, although a first card is commonly granted for a shorter probationary period. Renewal depends on continued compliance with the conditions and the development of the self-employed activity.
Assessment criteria
The application should demonstrate the applicant’s right of residence, the feasibility of the business project, the applicant’s qualifications or experience, and the added value of the activity for Belgium or for the relevant Region.
A professional card application requires a coherent business plan, supporting financial documents and evidence that the proposed activity is realistic and useful. Legal assistance may help identify the competent authority, organize the file and address questions raised during the review process.
