Belgium recorded a positive international migration balance of 47,562 people in 2025, according to figures published by Statbel on 10 June 2026. The country registered 177,094 international immigrations and 129,532 emigrations. Although the net balance fell by 28% compared with 2024, international migration remained the principal driver of Belgium’s demographic growth.
Since 2022, Belgium has recorded more deaths than births each year. In 2025, the positive migration balance compensated for this negative natural balance and contributed to an increase of 42,672 inhabitants, corresponding to population growth of 0.36%.
The figures also reveal the diversity of international mobility. Belgian nationals represented the largest group of immigrants, with 22,776 returning or arriving in the country, followed by Romanian and French nationals. The average age of people immigrating to Belgium was 29.5 years, underlining the importance of mobility for the country’s working-age population.
These statistics cover all forms of international migration and should not be interpreted as figures for labour immigration alone. They nevertheless confirm that Belgium’s demographic and economic development remains closely connected to international mobility. Effective legal immigration channels, access to employment and successful integration will therefore continue to be important for the country’s future.
